Professional Practices & Responsibilities (PPR)
The Professional Practices and Responsibilities (PPR) course explains the legal framework that you fit into in your status as a commercial operator. Whatever vessel you work on, it will help you understand and execute your duty of care and give you the principles, guidance and techniques to make the right choices and decisions.
PPR is compulsory for anyone using a RYA qualification or Certificate of Competence to gain a commercial endorsement in order to work professionally as skipper or crew.
How to book this course
The RYA does not offer this course direct to students, to complete this course please contact our office and we can talk you through the process. The cost of the online course is £39.00.
East Anglian Sea School are a PPR Training center via the RYA eLearning site www.ryainteractive.org. We can provide support from a remote instructor who can help with any queries during the online course.
'RYA commercial Regulation for Small Vessels' book accompanies the course and you can be purchased from our eBay shop.
How does the course work?
The course has four modules: commercial environment, people, vessel and purpose. Following the modules there are mock assessments you can use to check you are ready before taking the final online assessment. The RYA estimate it will take around 6-8 hours to work through the modules and the final assessment is split into two sections that should take about 2 and a half hours.
Renewing your Commercial Endorsement
Once you have taken your first PPR course, at subsequent renewals of your commercial endorsement you will need to take a reduced version of the course and a short test to make sure you are still up to speed with the subject.
If you are over 65 and subject to more regular medical fitness examinations, you do not need to take the PPR course each time you renew your medical. You will simply need to take it when your commercial endorsement is due for renewal (normally every five years).
