RYA VHF Radio Operator Course and Exam
£100 + £60 fee payable on the day of the exam (to the RYA)
East Anglian Sea School offers the RYA Short Range VHF Radio Operators Course (SRC) online via RYA Interactive.
This is the radio operator qualification which authorises the holder to operate a VHF radio telephone fitted with Digital Selective Calling (DSC) on board any British vessel which is voluntarily fitted with radio equipment.
If you own a marine VHF radio, hand held or fixed on the boat, you are required by law to hold an operators licence. This means that you know the procedures and avoid clogging up the airwaves with unnecessary transmissions, which could block out a Mayday distress call.
In January 2014 the RYA Short Range Certificate course changed to keep in line with other European countries as per the rules and regulations under CEPT (The European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations).
Suggested Previous Experience
None, however you should know the phonetic alphabet, it is tested in the exam and can be found in the RYA Booklet G31 which is included in the cost of the course. We send this to you when you enroll on the course.
The online RYA VHF interactive course can be taken on PC, MAC and iPads, is modular and is expected to take 10 hours to complete. Download a free online taster here. The online course comes with a Marine Radio simulator so you can practice using the VHF radio interactively.
To enroll on the VHF Online course please contact our administration team who can get you signed up on the RYA Interactive e-learning site.
After completing the online course you will still need to attend a RYA SRC Radio Exam, this has to be done at a recognised RYA Training Center, such as ourselves. The exam will take no more than a couple of hours and costs £60 which you will need to make payable to the RYA for your exam and licence. You also require a passport photo for your licence.
