RYA / MCA Diesel Engines

RYA Course: 1 day: £130

MCA Course: 4 days: £565

Recommended Royal Yachting Association Course

Mechanical failure is the main cause of lifeboat callouts to yachts and motor cruisers. Basic maintenance and engine care will make sure that you are not part of this depressing statistic.

This course aims to teach the basics of how your engine works and how to keep it healthy by using basic checks and maintenance procedures, and how to go about getting started again should a mechanical breakdown occur. Most engine problems can be avoided by taking simple precautions and, most importantly, you don't need any prior mechanical knowledge. Subjects covered during the course include principles of diesel engine operation, the systems and parts of an engine, fault finding and rectification of common problems, bleeding the fuel system, changing the impeller, routine maintenance and winter lay up procedures.

Book Course

The course is designed to teach sailors to be more self sufficient and is a must for all yachtsmen - a sound knowledge of diesel engines may not just save you money but one day could save your life!

The course is of equal value to the sailor with an auxiliary diesel and the motor cruising enthusiast.

Marine Coast Guard Agency Approved Engine course (AEC)

If you rely on a marine diesel engine as the main propulsion unit on a vessel and need to be able to identify faults and carry out engine servicing this course is for you as required for the MCA Code of Practice. It covers basically the same subjects as the one day course but in much greater depth and with more "hands on" experience.

Suggested Previous Experience

none.

Course Content

Both of the courses cover the marine diesel engine operation, The fuel, lubrication, cooling and electrical systems. Engine maintenance, winterisation and fault diagnosis are also covered. The courses differ in that the depth of tuition is reflected in the course duration and the MCA approved engine course complies with the requirements of the MCA Code of Practice for commercial vessels.
