RYA Day Skipper

2 day w/e: £235

3 day w/e: £350

5 days: £585

The 5 day, RYA Day Skipper Sailing practical course is for aspiring skippers who have some yachting experience and basic navigation and sailing ability.

If you are concerned about your sailing ability, a way to learn is on an RYA Level 2 dinghy course or on board one of our cruising sailing yachts. You should be able to sail around a triangular course and control boat speed and if gybing is still a surprise, then you need more practice. Navigation can be learnt by attending the RYA Day Skipper shorebased theory course at our Sea School.

Each trainee skipper will be asked to skipper the yacht on a short passage. The instructor will be on hand to give advice and encouragement, ensuring that your destination is reached safely. The essential element is that you experience being in charge, taking the credit when all goes well and also being responsible when it does not. The end of each day is usually spent around the chart discussing the passages and gaining from each other's experience. At the end of the course you should achieve a level of seamanship and boat handling up to the standard required to skipper a small cruising yacht safely by day in tidal waters with which the student is familiar.

Suggested Previous Experience

You should already know how to sail. Your knowledge of coastal navigation & meteorology should be to the standard of Day Skipper shorebased course.

Course Content

You will be coached over the full RYA syllabus (see below)as you live aboard one of the school owned yachts. These conform to or exceed the MCA standards for sail training. The full course syllabus is found in RYA logbook G15 available from our office.
